How to dress for your shape: The Pear

Pears are in great company! photo: creativefashionglee.com

Pears are in great company! photo: creativefashionglee.com

And our Body shape series continues!

So your a PEAR!  Well now you can join over 80% of Australian women 🙂  The pear body shape is the most common body shape in Australia & New Zealand.

The pear shape ladies have a more narrow shoulder area in comparison to their hips width.  Pears usually have a smaller waist and chest area (some) and a lota booty and hip action going on.  Some pears will find they have a rounder bottom and some flatter, the main distinction from any other body shape is the shoulder to hip width ratio.

The gorgeous Pear shapes

The gorgeous Pear shapes

The pears have a gorgeously curvy shape and are super fun to style.  The idea is to get your shoulder area matching the width of your hips.

Bootylicious pears... rocking their curves!

Bootylicious pears… rocking their curves!

Clothes that flatter pears:

Show off your gorgeous waist and help balance them hips by wearing tops and jackets with some shoulder accessories.  Shoulder pads, ruffles or embellishments all count!

You have a curvy lower body so show it off!  Things that skims your lower half will showcase the curves.  If you don’t want to show case too much stick to things that skim not cling.

If your a shorter pair, long boots will make your legs disappear so stick to ankle boots.

To elongate you body wear vertical strips and pointy toe shoes.

And the most important HAVE FUN!  Your a Pear!  Your gorgeous!

Go out there and work it sista!

Fashionista Queen B

Ah, Queen B!  You can do no wrong sista.  This curvalicious woman not only has “beauty and class but she got style and she got Ass” as she puts it in one of my favorite songs she sings: “Why don’t you love me”

I have loved Beyonce ever since her Destiny Child days when her mother made the group their clothing and then launched House of Deréon clothing and Jeans for the bootlicious gals.   Now a mother, a wife and an inspiring philanthropic performing artist Beyonce has never been better.  She continues to inspire women across the globe with her message of love, gratitude, confidence and equality for women every where.

Make friends with strangers

Meet more strangers ladies!

Meet more strangers ladies!

Do you want to know what my dream is?

Imagine 4 ladies in an elevator together, ‘strangers’. Then by the end of that 40 second ride they become the best of friends.

Why is that so impossible to think that it can be true?  I know I have made the best of friends from standing in line in the bathroom!  I think it is so absolutely exciting to meet strangers.  The problem is not every women feels this way.

Have you ever heard someone say “I am shy” or maybe you have said you are shy.  I can understand that being shy would prevent you from starting up a chat with a stranger in the bathroom but image if you did? Imagine that there in the airport bathroom you met your best friend and future brides maid to be?!

Don’t laugh these things can happen….

stranger really are friends you haven't met yet

stranger really are friends you haven’t met yet

Want to know how to become more confident, prettier, nicer, more abundant, loveable, desirable, funny, lovely?

Compliment other women.  Tell a stranger something you think is gorgeous about them, their face, their shoes their style; anything.

A great mentor of mine once said:

What you appreciate in others will appreciate in you.

The best way to feel beautiful and feel love, is to show that to others.  The world would be such a nicer place if we decided to take the first step.  I know it may seem hard when you hear about how ‘catty’ women are but can I make a suggestion?  If all YOU see is “catty” women maybe there is something in YOU that is a bit “catty”.

When you see other women you actually don’t see them, you see yourself.  Life is a mirror, reflecting back what you choose to see.  If you look at someone and all you see is their greatness, guess what?  That is the greatness in you, you are seeing reflect off them.

You may have heard the quote from Ghandi:

Be the change you want to see in the world.

It couldn’t be truer.  So next time you see someone you don’t know, glance at them and smile or even give em a little “hello!” they will be so surprised you did and they will probably say hello back.

You never know what an effect you may have on others with a smile

You never know what an effect you may have on others with a smile

And if they don’t it’s all good, you took the first step and that in itself will feel SO good.  Believe me sista.

How to dress for your shape: The Hourglass

Body series is back Queens!

The Hourglass aka Miss Curvaceousness

Other Hourglasses

Ultimate curves

Killer curves all around

The Hourglass body shape is known to be the ‘ideal’ body shape.  Says who?  I don’t know, it’s something the media probably made up?!  In my opinion it’s just a beautiful shape that you can do a lot with when styling but I don’t think it’s fair to say every woman needs to strive to be this shape.

Most of you know I am a huge fan of being yourself and celebrating the shape you got given.  I just happen to be an hourglass shape and I use to find it hard to dress my shape at times.

The hourglass shape is know for its smaller defined waist and balanced shoulder to hip width.   Since hourglasses are usually the same width around their upper and lower body this can make for easier styling.  BUT!  There are always tips to help you dress your shape in the most flattering way.

Here are some ways to dress for the Hourglass shape:

1.  Go for pieces that ‘Skim’ your body not ‘Cling’ to your body – too tight is tacky ya’ll

2.  SHOW OFF THOSE CURVES – If you wear baggy clothes around your upper body, you can look bulky – the more fitted, the better (especially if you have a larger chest like me)

3.  Wrap dress will rock your world – this is a dream dress no matter what size Hourglass you are, wrapping in at all the right places

Cant go wrong with a wrap dress! photo credit: pinterest- girlwithcurves

Cant go wrong with a wrap dress! photo credit: pinterest- girlwithcurves

4. V-Neck and scoop neck tops are your best friends – this will elongate you and showing a little skin helps to give you a leaner looking neckline as well ( a bit of cleavage is a good excuse as well)

Deep V- Neck elongates the neckline photo credit: Denise Bidot Pinterest

5.  Don’t over do the fabric – If you are shorter don’t cover too much of the upper body (thick turtle necks, heavy layering) you may make your torso disappear making you look extra short and bulky.

6.  Invest in an amazing bra! um….enough said!  This can do wonder for your waist and again your gorgeous torso

7.  Pencil skirts are your best friends for ultimate curves show off and they go with everything (and they are a staple piece every curvy girl must own, triple whamey!)

8. A-line everything for you honey! – This cut is so gorgeous for curves it helps the eye look at all the right places

9.  Invest in a great belt – enough said, these are great for accentuating your gorgeous waist.  If you are a fuller Hourglass figure go for a thicker belt.

A belt and layering still shows off the waist line photo: Pinterest

10.  Coats or jackets that have double buttons under the chest will elongate you and help cinch your waist in even more.  Your warm and adding to the curves, bonus!

Big love you curvalicious Hourglasses you!

The best bra I’ve ever worn

The one and only bra expert!

The one and only bra expert!

For the first time ever in my bra wearing life, I am in love with my bra.  Finally!

Bras that actually fit your boobs!  How great!  No matter how big or small this lady knows her bra’s.

Love this cut sexy and comfy!

Love this cut sexy and comfy!

I remember the first time I met Regina, CEO & founder of Miss Scarlett Did it.  I shook her hand and 5 minutes later she was  adjusting my bra.  Not only did she know that my bra wasn’t adjusted properly but she knew I had the wrong size bra on!

Along with 85% of all women who aren’t wearing the right bra, there I was wondering why every bra I bought (no matter the price) never seemed to fit me properly.

My new favorite bra ya'll!

My new favorite bra ya’ll!

It was quiet funny because I swore up and down I was a double D cup…ha!  She was like “uh uh sista! You are SO an F cup!”

WHAT!  I was so shocked.  Turns out….I am an F cup! And it’s actually not as bad as I thought.

Regina has been a master of helping women realize their true ‘bra’ potential whilst keeping the boobs under control.  Being a larger cup herself she understood all of my problems and knew exactly what I needed.  You wouldn’t believe her if she told you her size since Regina, who learned her mastery in fitting and adjusting in the UK (where they fit the Queen, might I add) has got the ‘eye’ for fitting the girls all into one very sexy looking package.

When I ordered this bra I couldn’t wait to put it on and seriously now I can’t stop talking about how comfortable I am in it.  (I am pretty sure I flashed all my friends at this cafe on Sunday morning)

My boobs look and feel great, when in the past things were falling out under, on the top and the sides!  I can’t stress enough how important it is to know your body shape and what will suit you best.

So gorgeous Miss SCarlett

Miss Scarlett Did It recently showed at the Virgin Australia Melbourne Fashion Festival cultural program – The Curvy Couture Roadshow.  Her models were gorgeous as they walked down the runway in nothing but bras and undies.  It was so liberating and beautiful.  If you missed it here’s what it looked like:

Sports Luxe Love

Trend spotlight: sports luxe

We saw the sports luxe trend really kick off in summer and it has only gotten bigger since then.

This autumn, sporty never looked so chic, as seen on some of the great sports luxe pros from Gwen Stefani to Rita Ora, and we can’t forget my homegirl, Jenny from the block. This trend is on fire and looks like it’s not going away any time soon.

This is one of my favourite trends, because growing up I was a super tomboy (but still wore my red lipstick of course!). Now it’s so easy to sports luxe it up!

The look includes bomber jackets, sneakers, casual Converse, high heel high-tops, leather trims, jerseys, and anything that has a ‘sporty’ element to it.

The awesome thing about this trend is that anyone can wear it and it’s really easy to integrate to your wardrobe.

What you’ll need:

Jersey tops

Baseball cap – use leather details, coloured panels, and a bit of bling to dress it up

High heeled high-tops

Monochrome sports luxe – a combination of two trends

Panel pants – look sporty and casual, but pair them with heels to dress them up

Sneakers – any colour will cut it

A sporty slogan t-shirt

Trend focus: sports luxe, the jersey

Add glamour to a jersey with heels. Photo on right: vogue.co.uk

If you want to ease into the sporty look, keep the heels on high and get yourself into a jersey dress or long sporty tee; add a blinged out statement necklace and boom!

Sports luxe: high-tops, high heeled and metallic

High-tops of the classic and high heeled metallic varieties.

High-top high heel heaven! These are so great because you don’t lose your height or your chicness. Nike has done some really hot sports luxe high-tops in metallic colours, so no matter how casual you go, this embellished shine will keep your outfit looking polished.

Trend focus: sport luxe caps

A stylish cap – perfect for bad hair days.

I just love the cap look. It’s great for a not-so-hot hair day or if you want to down play a dressy outfit. The leather look is my fave at the moment. Black goes with most outfits, plus if you work monochrome quite often, you nail two trends with one cap.

Trend focus: sport luxe t-shirt

The sporty t-shirt. Photo: Think Wear Style.

The sporty t-shirt paired with some waxed or leather pants and heels is where it’s at. The t-shirt says, “I didn’t try to look this amazing today”. Add a splash of colour to it all with a bright lip and some smoking heels. You are officially the hottest thing on the street.

Sport luxe staple, Converse

Classic Converse

Good ol’ Converse – where would sports luxe fashion be without you? Invest in a great pair of Converse, ladies. You want to get a bit fancy? Try pairing them with some tall socks; stylish AND warm for autumn – bonus points!

The Perfect Pair of Jeans

Yes!  You read that right ladies.  Thanks to the gorgeous Natalie Wakeling, who started Embody Denim, you CAN find the perfect pair of jeans.

Jean shopping. I know some of you are cringing just reading those two words. Although jeans are a ‘must have key piece‘ in your wardrobe, shopping for them is what most women despise doing.

Enter Natalie Wakeling to save the denim day.

Natalie Wakeling Australias first plus size fashion editorial model

Natalie Wakeling, Australia’s first plus size fashion editorial model

Natalie created Embody Denim after years of frustration at the lack of fashionable, denim options for the size 14+ customer. Being Australia’s fist ever fashion editorial plus-size model, she had so much knowledge and experience on fit and fabrics that she decided to put her expertise to creating the first premium range of designer denim that would finally fit and flatter curvy women.

Natalie has worked as a plus size model for over twelve years and she knows first hand what curvy women want and intends to see that her market gets it.

Established in 2006, Embody Denim jeans are unique and seem to be made especially with curves in mind. They feature subtle design additions, such as special seams, support bands, and pocket placement to help enhance the silhouette of curvy women.

YAY! Amen for Natalie and Embody Denim! Seriously, thank you sista.

Embody Denim has done so well as the leader in designer denim that Natalie has now expanded her collection to include Embody Clothing, a seasonal range of tailored skirts, body skimming dresses, and classic jackets in this season’s must-have prints, fabrics, and cuts to suit curves.

Embody Clothing

Embody Clothing

I recently got to meet and connect with this amazing woman at the Curvy Couture Roadshow.  I watched her latest collection of denim and her extended range, Embody Clothing, strut down the runway and I was in awe of the gorgeous fabrics, colours, and textures, not to mention that the beautiful curvy models who rocked her label were so gorgeous and inspiring. The beautiful Laura Wells is featured in many of the Embody campaigns. She is such a gorgeous woman, it’s no wonder!

I love the statement on Embody Denim’s website:

We Believe,

That all women are created equal.
That beautiful women come in all different shapes and sizes.
That all should enjoy gorgeous fashion designer jeans.
That designer denim should be available in petite and plus sizes.
This is Embody Denim. Denim that loves your body.

I know you are wondering, with so many different cuts out there how do you know which jeans are right for you?

So many cuts and choices to suit every BODY

So many cuts and choices to suit every BODY! photo: Embody Denim

Well, Natalie has sorted that out for you too. Not only do they offer a page solely dedicated to finding jeans to suit your exact body shape, but if you send through your measurements they will help you find the perfect pair to suit your shape by offering you a personal consultation.

It is service like this that makes these guys the best at what they do.  As you would have seen in our Body Shape Series post last week, it is so important you know your shape so you can choose styles that will flatter you best.

THIS is service! Finding jeans for YOUR shape

THIS is service! Finding jeans for YOUR shape

My body shape is an hourglass and my personal problem is finding jeans that fit my booty and thighs AND also fit at the waist. I know you hourglasses out there feel me! It’s a pain in the booty when your jeans are sagging at the waist but the lower half is fitting perfectly. Here is what the website told me when I clicked my shape:

‘Styles:  TemptTempt NarrowIce Queen SkinnyBlue baby, Fever SkirtBella and Fever Jeans are your best options as these styles have a wider leg and higher waistband to showcase your waist.’

Seriously! How cool is this? I LOVED the Ice Queen Skinny Denim Jeans as I felt they were so my style:

Ice Queen Skinny Denim Jeans

“Ice queen skinny is a versatile wearable skinny leg jean that can be worn by most women. Particularly good for hourglass and pear shaped women. With a three way ankle design you can control the look of your jeans.”

So to all you curvy Queens out there who can’t find denim that suits, this is the brand for you.

You can purchase her ranges through the Embody Denim websiteTe Kiero Boutique in Avondale Heights in Melbourne, and they also sell on The Iconic.

Ok, ok! I know you are hanging to go find out which jeans are right for you so I’ll leave you to it, girl.

Happy jeans shopping!

The 10 Pieces Every Curvy Queen Needs in Their Wardrobe

Love the colours in this wardrobe!

Love the colours in this wardrobe!

I am really big on creating a wardrobe that works and that you can easily mix and match up with all the pieces you own.

I have created this list as a guideline on what items are must haves (before you go buying the trends and the fancy floral prints). Get these items in your wardrobe ASAP, you will be surprised how much you use them on a daily basis.  Here we go:

1. A Great Bra

Your bra can make or break your confidence, there is nothing worse than four boobs popping out or, even worse, you having to adjust them every five steps you take!

Let me tell you, I just recently purchased the first bra that has ever fitted me the RIGHT way! I can’t even begin to tell you how friggin’ exciting this is! My boobs are huge and they do not sit well in most bras. Actually, I can’t say I have ever fitted into any bra I have owned… until now!

I met with Regina from Miss Scarlett Did It and she fit me into the perfect bra. This women is a master of bra fitting. Not only am I super comfortable but my waist became more defined, my back looks awesome, and the girls are sitting exactly where they should be. The free boob lift is such a great bonus!

2. A Pair of Jeans That Make You Feel Gorgeous

Denim is always making a comeback in fashion but that’s because it’s never gone anywhere! Jeans that you love wearing are a must for your wardrobe. I know it’s a tough gig to find jeans you love, but let me tell you ladies, it is well worth the hunt.  I love Embody Denim. The owner, Natalie Wakeling really knows her stuff. She was Australia’s first ever plus size model and has created a brand that understands our curves and the cuts and fabrics that suit. When you are looking for jeans be sure to try them on. If you’re an online shopping addict then you’ll need to know all your measurements, especially the inner leg as this area gets forgotten and you want to make sure the fit is exactly what you’re looking for. They should feel a bit snug at first but once you wear them they should sit comfortably. I seriously feel I live in my jeans, there is so much you can do with denim (hmmm I think I feel a denim blog post coming up!).

3. The Pencil Skirt

You can never go wrong with this staple piece. This skirt is great for every curvy body shape and it goes with almost everything. The pencil skirt can be dressed up or dressed down, and is great for layering. If you are wider at the hips, work with smaller print or go with colour blocking (just one colour, no patterns). If you have a flatter bottom and want to create some action around that area, wearing larger print will help make it appear bigger and rounder.

4. The Blazer/Jacket

Black, pattern, dressy, or casual, you can never go wrong when you throw a jacket on (OMG that totally rhymes, ha ha!).  Jackets are especially great for autumn. I love that it’s a key piece you can dress up, dress down, or make some jeans look really fancy with a pair of heels. Casual style icon Jennifer Aniston has helped many of us learn that if you throw a suit jacket on top of a tee shirt your outfit is instantly transformed. It’s great to have a black jacket, as it’s probably the one you’ll use the most. As you add to the collection don’t forget to look at detail; leather trim, funky buttons, and zips. It’s worth investing a bit more on this piece as it will be something you can pair up with almost anything.

5. A Statement Necklace

Ok, I will admit… I have a slight addiction to these. By slight I mean I own like 60 of them, and by addiction I mean I am always hunting for more; cooler, newer, and bigger ones. Oh gosh, what can I say about these necklaces?! They go with EVERYTHING! I love wearing them over the collar of a buttoned-up shirt. They work wonders with simple minimal colours or tops that are low-key, and they look funky with tops that have a busy pattern as well. I love them mostly because you can be as expressive as you want; I get really funky with the styles I pick because it makes me feel like I am wearing a little work of art around my neck.

6. The A-line Dress

I recently posted the photos below about Adele and her bad self in this A-line dress. I just loved everything about what this dress did for her figure. The pattern, the length, and the A-line takes in her waist so nicely. These skirts and dresses really work wonders for the curvy woman. A-lines are great because they draw the eye to the areas you want to highlight and they skim over your curves nicely.

7. Black Leggings and (7.5) Black Opaque Tights!

I’ve done 7 and 7.5 because we all need a good pair of leggings especially in the cooler seasons when the layering comes into play, but the tights are a must have for me as well! I love my tights; I wear them with skirts and boots and dresses and then I try to get all creative and buy weird textured tights. It’s kinda fun, so why not!? Again, black is very doable because you will get a lot of use out of them. I bought a polka dot royal blue pair and a black pair, and, um… yeah, I have only worn the polka dots once; my black ones on the other hand, well! I had to buy 5 pairs, just in case!

8. The Wrap Dress

This is the ultimate in curvy styling!  You cannot go wrong with a wrap dress. The amazing Oprah (who can do no wrong) loves these dresses and the dresses love her, too. It accentuates and brings the eyes straight to the waist and the boobs. The different sleeves and skirt lengths are great as well, since some of us like to go longer and some are keen to show more skin. What I will say is, a wrap dress that is a V-neck or scoop neck will work best as it elongates and shows off a bit of the girls, and since you have a great bra (right?), why not?

9. The Classic T-shirt

Another item I live in! I have recently been wearing my hubby’s t-shirts because they sit so nicely and baggy. T-shirts are great – again – for dressing up or going a’la casual. When you find one you like, I say get it in a few colours; black and white for sure but look for a nice bright colour that makes your face pop. These are great pieces to layer in autumn and will go with almost everything on this list.

10. A Great Pair of Flashy Flats

I recently did a blog post on the ‘man’ shoe. I love me some heels, don’t get me wrong, but there is nothing like a comfortable, gorgeous pair of flats. Now there are so many different styles, colours, and textures to choose from you could flat shoe shop for days (ah, Wittner outlet, don’t even get me started girl!)

I love flats but I like them to have some serious personality. I struggle wearing the ballerina plain round toe flats when there are so many cool colours and styles to choose from. My favourite pairs are the ones with unique things like sequins or see through material; the weirder the better. Red flats are really versatile, since you can wear them with stripes, blue, black, and white.

I Am Grateful For… Technology

Quote: technology brings the world closer together

It’s crazy to think that we used to live in a world of 6 degrees of separation; now it’s only 2 degrees of separation. Distance no longer matters; we can video call or message someone on the other side of the world and have immediate contact, as if they were sitting next to us.

Having moved to Australia from the US 4 years ago, you can imagine I use technology a lot to communicate with family and friends back home.

Last week, my mother (bless her heart, she is terrible with technology) was trying to figure out how to text me from her iPhone. I swear I showed her 47 times how to do it when she came to visit, but of course she doesn’t remember.

Well, I ended up calling her on this amazing program called Tango, which is kind of like Skype without having to login.  She was so cute! She picked up and then flipped out at the fact that she was video calling her daughter in Australia.

I got to thinking, how cool is this? Back in her day this would have seemed like some kind of sci-fi futuristic movie scene, and here we were having a video call in our kitchens, thousands of miles away from each other!

Why I'm grateful for social media

Social media has been another crazy technological miracle that I am super grateful for.

The fact that you can find old friends or long lost family on social platforms is so amazing. I love that I can chat and connect with people from all over the world. I get really excited when I am checking out someone’s blog from a country on the other side of the planet – it’s so cool!

Nowadays, when you have a message to share with the world, it is 100 times easier than the old days of sending messages with birds! Technology continues to make a huge impact with all the life-changing things it can do.

We shop online, read, listen to music, watch TV and movies, run businesses, create events, and even date online!

Facebook and social media: helping us stay connected

It’s funny because at times I find myself telling off my hubby about playing on his phone and not engaging, but it’s more than just checking your news feed and seeing what people are doing.

Technology has changed the way we live and it’s pretty exciting as to what’s possible. Imagine our world 10 years from now!

So I want to say thank you to the amazing people who have changed the way our planet communicates – to all the Steve Jobs of the world, we love you! For technology, I am grateful.
